Mentorship and Male Role Models: Why They Matter
A lot of men reach midlife and quietly realise they were never shown how to do this. How to be a father. How to be a partner. How to handle anger. How to be in their bodies. How to fail without falling apart. The men they grew up around either weren't there, weren't well, or weren't able to teach what they didn't know themselves.
This isn't anyone's fault. It's the inheritance of generations of men who were trained out of emotional language. But it leaves a gap, and that gap costs. Mentorship and grounded male role models are how it gets filled.
Why It Matters
We Learn How to Be Men From Other Men
You can read every book, listen to every podcast, do every course, but the deepest learning happens by being around other men, watching how they handle stress, conflict, fatherhood, fear. There's no substitute.
Without It, We Improvise
Without role models, we cobble masculinity together from films, social media, and the fragments we did see growing up. The result is often a confused, performative version of being a man, with no foundation.
What Good Male Mentorship Looks Like
- Older men who've done their own work and aren't trying to be your father
- Honest conversation, not advice-dispensing
- Permission to not have it figured out
- Holding you accountable without shaming you
- Modelling, not preaching, what they do matters more than what they say

Where to Find It
Men's Circles
The most accessible entry. A regular gathering of men of mixed ages, where mentorship happens organically through being in the room together. The Men's Circle in Canterbury is one such space, free, monthly, no pressure.
Peer support
If you can invest in it, working 1:1 with a grounded male coach can be transformative. Look for someone with their own lived experience, not just credentials.
Older Friends
Sometimes the mentor is already in your life, an older colleague, a relative, a neighbour. The relationship doesn't need to be formal. Just intentional.
Recovery Communities
AA, NA, SMART, and similar communities are full of men who've done deep work and are happy to walk alongside others doing the same.
Safety
A confidential space, held with care.
Steadiness
Move at your own pace, week by week.
Growth
Quiet steps that build over time.
Becoming One Yourself
Most men who've benefited from mentorship eventually find themselves on the other side of it, being the older voice for younger men, the steady presence in a circle, the friend who listens well. This is one of the quiet gifts of doing your own work. You become someone whose life can serve as a useful map for others.

FAQ
I don't have any older men in my life. What do I do?
Start with a men's circle or a mentorship-friendly community. Mentors often appear once you put yourself in the right rooms.
Can mentorship replace therapy?
No, but it complements it well. Different tools for different layers.
How is mentorship different from advice?
Peer support is usually structured, paid, time-bound. Mentorship is often relational, longer-term, less formal.
How do I ask someone to mentor me?
Often, you don't have to formally ask. Spend time with them, ask thoughtful questions, follow through. The relationship deepens organically.
Where in the UK can I find men's circles?
MENd Together's Canterbury circle, Andy's Man Club groups across the UK, ManKind Project events, and many local men's wellbeing groups. Search locally.
