    MENd Inside

Connection, responsibility and a different way forward.

Facilitated men's work delivered inside prisons, creating space for honest conversation, practical wellbeing tools and meaningful personal development.

Delivered by DBS-checked facilitators under a written safeguarding policy, in accordance with each establishment's security and information-sharing requirements.

A space to look beneath the surface.

Prison can be a place where men learn to keep their guard up. Vulnerability may feel unsafe, emotions can be difficult to express and the pressures of custody can make it harder to maintain a sense of identity, hope or connection.

Many men also carry experiences of loss, trauma, addiction, relationship difficulties, shame or long-standing patterns of coping that have shaped their lives. These experiences do not excuse harmful behaviour, but understanding them can be an important part of taking responsibility and making different choices.

MENd Inside creates a structured, respectful space where men can begin to explore these areas without being pressured to disclose personal experiences or participate in therapy.

    What the sessions explore.

    Understanding ourselves

Exploring identity, personal experiences, emotional awareness and the patterns that influence how we respond to life.

    Managing difficult emotions

Practical approaches to stress, anger, anxiety and overwhelm, including grounding, breathing and recognising early warning signs.

    Relationships and communication

Understanding how we relate to others, expressing needs more effectively, listening and developing healthier ways of managing conflict.

    Responsibility and choices

Exploring the difference between understanding our experiences and taking responsibility for our behaviour, with a focus on the choices available to us now.

    Connection and belonging

Building trust, reducing isolation and experiencing the value of supportive relationships with other men.

    Looking towards the future

Identifying strengths, values, sources of support and realistic steps towards a more stable and meaningful life.

    How we work.

MENd Inside combines facilitated group conversation with practical exercises, reflection and accessible wellbeing tools. Sessions are designed to be engaging and relevant, rather than classroom-based or overly clinical.

We recognise that men arrive with different experiences, levels of confidence and readiness to participate. Nobody is required to share personal trauma or disclose more than they feel comfortable with.

Our approach is trauma-informed, strengths-based and grounded in clear boundaries. We encourage accountability without shame, curiosity without judgement and participation without pressure.

Where appropriate, the programme can also include individual check-ins or additional support, subject to the establishment's requirements and agreed delivery arrangements.

    Flexible delivery for prison establishments.

We can work with prison teams to develop a suitable delivery model, including:

    • Introductory men's wellbeing and connection sessions.
    • Structured multi-week group programmes.
    • Themed workshops focused on emotional wellbeing, relationships, coping and personal development.
    • Facilitated sharing circles where appropriate.
    • Bespoke programmes developed around an identified cohort or rehabilitation need.

Group size, session length, eligibility and programme content would be agreed with the establishment. Delivery would take place in accordance with prison security, safeguarding, information-sharing and operational requirements.

MENd Inside is not a replacement for prison healthcare, psychological services, substance misuse treatment or accredited offending behaviour programmes. It is intended to complement existing provision and support men's wider wellbeing and personal development.

Who the programme may be suitable for.

MENd Inside may be appropriate for men who would benefit from structured support around emotional wellbeing, isolation, relationships, coping, identity or preparation for change.

Suitability would be agreed with the prison's relevant staff, taking account of individual needs, risk, group dynamics and the purpose of the programme. Participation would be voluntary wherever possible, with clear expectations around respectful behaviour and engagement.

We do not operate a blanket assumption that every man in custody needs the same intervention. The programme should be matched to the people taking part.

    About MENd Together.

MENd Together is a community organisation creating spaces where men can connect, talk honestly and feel less alone. Through men's groups, peer support, community activities and facilitated programmes, we help men build connection, confidence and a stronger sense of belonging.

Our work is shaped by lived experience and professional practice across mental health, homelessness, addiction, recovery and other difficult life experiences.

MENd Inside extends that approach into custodial settings, recognising that men in prison also need opportunities to develop supportive relationships, understand themselves and build a different way forward.

Led by experience. Grounded in practice.

The programme is led by MENd Together's Project Manager, who brings professional experience supporting people through mental health, homelessness, addiction and prison-based work, alongside his own lived experience of adversity, recovery and personal growth.

His training includes counselling skills, trauma-informed practice and motivational interviewing. This combination informs a practical, relational approach that meets men where they are while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
