What Happens on a Men's Retreat?

The honest answer is: it depends on the retreat, and that's not a dodge. A four-day retreat at a farmhouse in December looks different from a diving weekend in summer. But underneath the specifics, most men's retreats share a shape, and knowing that shape in advance is usually what turns 'I'm curious but nervous' into 'I could actually see myself going.'

    There's No Single Fixed Script

If you're picturing four days of sitting in a circle being asked how you feel, that's not really what happens, on a MENd retreat or most well-run retreats generally. What actually fills the days is closer to: arriving and settling in, shared meals that aren't rushed, some structured time together, plenty of unstructured time, activity or challenge depending on the retreat, and space to just be quiet if that's what you need. Conversation happens throughout all of it, not just in a designated 'talking session'.

The Shape of a Typical Day

Mornings tend to start slower than you'd expect. Coffee, breakfast, no rush. Depending on the retreat, the middle of the day might involve a walk, an activity, or simply time outdoors. Evenings are usually where the real conversation happens, often around food, sometimes around a fire, because that's when men tend to actually open up, once the day has taken the edge off the initial awkwardness of being somewhere new with people you don't know.

Nobody hands you a printed itinerary of emotional milestones. The structure exists to create the conditions for connection, not to force it on a schedule.

You won't be asked to recount your life story to a room of strangers.

What You Won't Be Asked to Do

You won't be asked to recount your life story to a room of strangers. You won't be put on the spot. You won't be told your reaction to something is wrong. Good facilitation on a retreat looks like creating space, not filling it for you — the difference between a retreat and a lecture is that a retreat trusts you to arrive at what you need to say, if anything, in your own time.

The Parts Nobody Warns You About

The first few hours are often the strangest part, not because anything goes wrong, but because you're standing in a kitchen with five or six men you've never met, and nobody quite knows what to do with their hands. That awkwardness is normal, and it passes faster than you'd expect, usually somewhere around the first shared meal or the first walk, once the small talk runs out and something more honest fills the gap instead.

By day two, most men report the strangest thing: it starts to feel completely ordinary. Not dramatic, not a breakthrough, just normal — four days with other men, doing normal things, having conversations that happen to go deeper than they usually would at home.

    Why the Setting Matters

Being away from your usual environment does something that's hard to replicate at home. No work emails within easy reach, no household admin pulling your attention, no default roles to perform. Distance from routine tends to loosen things that routine keeps tightly wound.

    Register Your Interest

If this sounds like the kind of few days you'd want, our current retreats are still at the interest stage, with no payment and no commitment involved yet. You can also see what actually happens at a men's circle if you want a sense of MENd's approach to bringing men together more generally.
