Men's Retreats, Men's Groups and Therapy: Understanding the Difference

These three things get talked about as if they're roughly the same, and they're not. Confusing them can mean either expecting more than a retreat can honestly offer, or missing that you actually need something more clinical than peer support can provide. Worth being precise about the difference.

    Therapy

One-to-one work with a trained, qualified professional, usually over weeks or months, often working towards specific clinical goals with someone bound by professional standards and confidentiality obligations that go beyond what any peer space can offer. If you're dealing with a diagnosable condition, ongoing crisis, or need clinical treatment, this is what you need, not a retreat or a group.

    Men's Groups

Regular, ongoing peer gatherings — MENd's own Men's Circle is a good example. Facilitated but not clinical, built around consistent connection over time with the same group of men, usually meeting weekly or monthly rather than as a single event.

All three can involve honest conversation among men.

    Retreats

A concentrated, time-limited version of connection and stepping away — days rather than weeks, usually with men you may not have met before, in a setting deliberately different from normal routine. Less about ongoing consistency, more about a genuine reset.

    Safety

A confidential space, held with care.

    Steadiness

Move at your own pace, week by week.

    Growth

Quiet steps that build over time.

Where They Overlap, and Where They Don't

All three can involve honest conversation among men. None of MENd's groups or retreats are therapy, diagnose anything, or replace clinical treatment where that's genuinely needed — and MENd's safeguarding responsibilities apply across all of them regardless. They can sit alongside therapy for men already in it, or exist as their own thing for men who aren't.
