    I Feel Ashamed. I Can't Tell Anyone.

Shame is the feeling that something is wrong with you, not just with what you did. A grounded, non-judgmental look at why it grips men so hard, and what loosens it.

Shame is louder than guilt. Guilt says 'I did a bad thing'. Shame says 'I am the bad thing'. That's a brutal place to live, and it's a place a lot of men live without ever saying it out loud.

If you searched this, you don't need a lecture and you don't need to be fixed. You need somewhere this can be heard without making it worse.

    What this often is

    What it usually means

Shame thrives in secrecy. The reason it feels so heavy is that you're carrying it alone.

It often attaches to one specific thing, something you did, something done to you, something you didn't do, and then quietly takes over your whole sense of self.

Men carry a lot of shame around: substance use, sexual experiences, anger, fatherhood failures, being abused as a boy, things they did during difficult years.

Shame keeps you from the very thing that dissolves it: being seen as yourself, in full, and not rejected.

    Right now

Small things you can try today

    • Try writing it down first, just for you. Don't edit. Naming it on paper is often the first place it can exist outside your own head.
    • Notice the voice. Shame usually sounds like an internal prosecutor. It is not the truth, it is a learned voice, and it can be quieted.
    • Find one safe place to say even a fragment of it out loud. A therapist, a trusted brother, a circle. Shame only stays the size it is because it never gets aired.

    Questions men ask

    FAQs

What's the difference between guilt and shame?
Guilt is feeling bad about something you did. Shame is feeling bad about who you are. Guilt can motivate change; shame paralyses. The work is usually moving the thing out of shame and into a more honest, workable place.
Will I have to tell you exactly what I'm ashamed of?
No. You set the pace. Many men work with us for a long time before the specific thing ever comes out, and many never need to spell it out at all to make real progress.
Is shame the same as low self-esteem?
They overlap, but shame is usually sharper and more specific. It tends to attach to a particular wound. Low self-esteem is more of a background hum.
