If you searched · I feel empty

I Feel Empty. Like Something's Missing.

The hollow feeling underneath everything you do. What it usually points to in men, and the quiet work of filling it from the inside.

It's not despair. It's not crisis. It's emptier than that, a hollow at the centre of the day that doesn't fill no matter what you put on top of it. Work doesn't fill it. Sex doesn't fill it. Buying things doesn't fill it. Drinking briefly mutes it.

If you searched this, something honest in you is asking for something realer than the thing you've been using.

    What this often is

    What it usually means

Emptiness often comes from a life built outward, for other people, for performance, for what was expected, without enough inward listening to know what's actually yours.

It can also follow a long period of suppressing feelings. The cost of not feeling the painful ones is that you can't feel the meaningful ones either.

For many men it shows up in their 30s or 40s, when the strategy that got them this far stops paying out and there's nothing else lined up underneath.

It's not depression, though it can become depression if it's left unmet for years.

    Right now

Small things you can try today

    • Notice what you reach for to mute it. Phone, drink, food, work, porn. Don't shame the reaching, just notice. The reaching is the signal.
    • Sit with the empty for ten minutes a day. No phone. No music. Just you and it. Counterintuitive, and powerful.
    • Ask: 'When in my life did I last feel full?' Not happy, not successful, full. The answer often points you somewhere real.

    Questions men ask

    FAQs

Is feeling empty the same as depression?
They overlap and they're not identical. Depression usually has a heaviness, hopelessness, and physical drag to it. Emptiness can come without those, more like a quiet absence than a weight. Both deserve support.
Can a relationship fill the empty?
Temporarily, sometimes. Permanently, no. Anything outside you that's used to fill the inside eventually buckles under the weight. The real work is making the inside a place worth being.
Will this go away on its own?
Usually it gets louder, not quieter, until it's met. That's not bad news, it's the part of you that knows there's more, refusing to let you settle for less.
