Do You Have to Talk at a Men's Retreat?

No. This is probably the single most common worry before a first retreat, and the honest answer is straightforward: you're never required to speak, disclose anything, or tell your story. Listening is a completely legitimate way to take part.

What 'Not Having to Talk' Actually Looks Like

In practice, it means nobody puts you on the spot, nobody notices or comments if you're quieter than the room, and there's no expectation that everyone contributes equally or on the same schedule. Some men talk a lot in the first hour. Some barely speak until day two, and then say something that mattered. Both are normal.

Why This Matters More Than It Might Sound

For a lot of men, the fear of being forced to perform vulnerability is the single biggest thing keeping them from ever trying something like this. Removing that pressure isn't a minor detail, it's often the thing that makes the whole idea feel possible in the first place.

This holds for the whole retreat, not just the arrival.

    You Retain Choice Throughout

This holds for the whole retreat, not just the arrival. If a conversation goes somewhere you don't want to follow, you're free to sit it out. Taking part at your own pace is the actual model, not an exception to it.

    One Honest Caveat

Safeguarding responsibilities still apply throughout any MENd activity, and confidentiality isn't absolute — see our safeguarding information for exactly how that works. That's a separate thing from being pressured to speak, and doesn't change the basic answer: nobody makes you talk.
