Staying Emotionally Strong For Your Children

Most fathers we meet are already doing more than they realise to support their children. The truth is that the most powerful thing a dad can give a child is a steady, regulated version of himself.

    Children don't need perfection

They need presence, warmth, consistency and honesty. They need a father whose nervous system is settled enough to be with theirs. They do not need a father who is performing being okay.

Your wellbeing is part of theirs

When you look after your own mental health, your sleep, your body and your support network, your children inherit the benefits. The opposite is also true. Caring for yourself is parenting.

    Hold the long view

Whatever season you're in right now, your relationship with your children is long. Show up for the small, ordinary moments when you can. Apologise when you get it wrong. Keep a door open in your heart.

You don't have to carry this alone

Many fathers find it helpful to connect with other men who understand. There may be value in talking with others navigating similar experiences, not for advice, but for the quiet relief of being heard by people who get it.

If anything in this article landed, our Monthly Fathers Support Group, Men's Circle, Walk & Talk, and Recovery Hub presence are gentle next steps. None of them ask you to perform, explain or fix anything. They simply hold a space for you.
